Silent Hill 2: Review Round Up

I remember when I was little I would read Game Informer and Gamepro magazine and would be confused by how many Silent Hill games there were. I knew more people who loved Sonic Adventure 2’s Pumpkin Hill than I did Silent Hill, yet these games kept coming out. Seriously, it wasn’t until Kojima attempted to release PT that I became aware of just how much love the franchise had and just how desperate the fanbase was for the series to return. Well, thankfully, after PT/Silent Hills was canceled by Konami, fans only had to wait 10 more years for something Silent Hill-related to release. And even better, that release comes in the form of a remake of Silent Hill 2.

My knowledge of the series might be limited, but I do know that Silent Hill 2 is one of the most interesting horror games ever made. While I’ve never played the game, I did watch Maximilian Dood play through the entire game over on Twitch, and even as a bystander, the game’s intense storytelling still stuck with me. With the remake of Silent Hill 2, early showings had fans concerned about its lack of polish and its seeming desire to walk away from the aspects of the game that made it so iconic. As Konami has shown more of the game off, those worries have started to change. The question still remains. Is Silent Hill 2 worth buying?

Review Round-Up:

The original Silent Hill 2 is one of the most beloved, culturally significant, and overall best horror games ever made. It appeared to be the case that trying to recapture the magic of that game was to misjudge how impactful its time and place were, and how its limitations helped shape it for the better. Any studio advancing on such a project should’ve had a Sisyphean task ahead of them, forever chasing its essence like a moth with a hole in your net. However, by staying true to the original game in extremely important ways and taking calculated risks born from an understanding of the source material, all while being supported further by some of the game’s original brain trust, Bloober Team has done what was reasonably considered near-impossible. The remake of Silent Hill 2 is a restless dream come true – Mark Delaney, Gamespot

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure I ever wanted a remake of one of my all-time favourite games. I didn’t think it was necessary any more than I thought Bloober could take Silent Hill 2’s themes and make them work in a modern game without somehow damaging its DNA or fumbling somewhere. Never have I been so pleased to be so wrong about something – Vikki Blake, Eurogamer
