There isn’t a calculator big enough to measure the amount of time I have given to Dragon Ball. Whether it was watching the show, drawing the characters, or looking up rumors about a potential live-action movie, it was Dragon Ball time, all of the time. For those of you too young to remember, go back and watch the original Cloverfield teaser trailer. We thought that was going to be a Dragon Ball movie. That’s how insane we all were back then. I tell you all of this to say that I had no interest in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero… until they started releasing character trailers. The amount of dopamine these trailers have injected into my veins should be illegal. I don’t even like 3D fighting games. I’m a 2D fighting man! But it’s Dragon Ball. Whether I’m 12 or 75, I’m always gonna be there. So. Even though the question doesn’t need to be asked, is this game worth buying?
Review Round-Up
It’s without a doubt the best Dragon Ball game I’ve ever played, and if I ever stop playing it over the next few months it won’t be because I’m not enjoying it, it’ll be because I’ve broken my PS5 controller trying to win too many clashes. – Sam Cawley, Gaming Bible
Sure, there are a lot of Gokus and Vegetas to play as, but Sparking Zero makes nearly every character and form feel distinct from one another with unique special moves and combos. With 182 fighters to pick from, it’s a triumph that they all feel like worthy picks and not clones of one another, thanks in part to the unique interactions, voice lines, and even character-specific moves like Goku swinging Frieza around by the tail. – George Foster, The Gamer
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero feels like a collective celebration for Akira Toriyama and the characters he created. I feel connected to others, reveling in the history of a franchise that is the cornerstone of shonen manga and anime and, for many of us, a gateway into international animation. And what better way to do this than with a return to the arena fighter structure anime fighters have been chasing? It may not be called Budokai Tenkaichi 4, but Dragon Ball Sparking Zero continues that legacy and brings all of us so very back. – Kate Sánchez, But Why Tho?
