Persona 5’s 2017 release would mean so much for so many. For newcomers like myself, it meant the start of a long journey that has seen me fall in love with the franchise on repeat. Whether it was 2017’s Persona 5, 2019’s Persona 5 Royal, or 2024’s Persona 3 Reload, the magic of the franchise has never left my side. With Metaphor: ReFantazio, the team behind the beloved Persona franchise looks to continue that magic but in a completely different setting. Long gone are the High School classrooms employed with teachers ready to ask you a question at the drop of a hat. Instead, Metaphor: ReFantazio will take players on a journey that involves political drama, giant monsters called “humans,” and a fantasy setting that looks to test long-time Persona fans’ comfort levels.
All that said, the main character gets to explore different cities while riding his sword like it’s the hoverboard from Back to The Future. Honestly, I’m burying the lead. Sword hoverboard. If that doesn’t get you excited, check your pulse because you might be dead. All that’s left now is to ask the most important question for your bank account. Is Metaphor: ReFantazio worth buying on day one?
Review Round-Up
Metaphor has the message, the gameplay, the style, and the music, but it also has the heart to make all of those core tenets truly sing together. I appreciate that it says all the right things about defying our circumstances and that collective action is what’s going to uplift those who’ve fallen through the cracks. But it has the teeth to show that ideal it is not clean or easy, too. – Michael Higham, IGN
The cast of characters is rich, and even late in the game, when it feels like it’s building to an obvious conclusion, new characters are introduced that have generous backstories, and quests for the player. The amount of things to do and dialogue to read in the game is staggering. Ultimately it’s a game that aims to balance long, combat-intense dungeons with long, exposition-intense conversations with your party. It does this excellently. – Jordan Middler, VGC
Metaphor: ReFantazio is simply excellent. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started the game, but it gradually won me over the more time I put into it. Though it has a few downfalls, I think Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of the most impressive games Atlus has ever developed. – Josh Torres, RPG Site
