Neva: Review Round Up

Whether or not you played Nomada Studio’s first game, Gris, we’ve all seen it and said the same thing. “Wow, that’s one of the prettiest games I’ve ever seen.” Nomada Studio is back with Neva, a game that takes the stunning visuals of Gris and hopes to add its own mix of gameplay with combat and puzzle platforming to give players an experience they’ll never forget. Since its first reveal, Neva has impressed with every showing. Game of The Year might be getting crowded with contenders, but Neva looks to push everyone aside. With such lofty goals, though, only one question remains. Is Neva worth buying on day one?

Review Round-Up:

In a world so vibrant, the black stain denoting my enemy’s arrival feels offensive. Like the grasping hands of death lurking amid life’s brightest blooms. I charge in to face the foes. My strikes are slashes of steel cutting silver streaks through the air. My movement flows like water, streaming through and around enemies. With every subsequent slash of my sword, life returns to me, until an opponent connects a hit. Fast, smooth action is its own reward. – Jill Grodt, The Indie Informer

Neva is potentially a tough game to recommend, as what you take away from the journey will be an entirely personal experience, dependent on your own interpretation of the themes and your own personal life experiences. If the themes do not resonate with you, the basic puzzle platforming and combat don’t really do enough to allow the title to stand above its contemporaries in the genre, and although the world invites speculation and intrigue, it offers very little in the way of answers. – Dawn, Nintendo Everything

Neva holds nothing back in the art, animation, and sound department. The experience is full of excellent uses of colour and shadows, each scene brimming with life in the backgrounds, character movements, and even small flourishes like Neva howling or Alba sitting down to rest. The soundtrack and pacing are also perfectly aligned with the story being told. They intensify the emotional story moments, particularly in the second half, and reinforce the fight for survival during the combat and platforming. – Echo Apsey, PushSquare
