When movie studio Blumhouse announced they were moving into the games industry, it’s safe to say we all made harsh assumptions about what that would look like. A Paranormal Activity augmented reality game for our phone where we record our bathrooms until a ghost goes, “boo.” Or maybe a game based on The Visit, but it’s an Among Us clone where players have to find out who the real grandparents are. To everyone’s surprise, Blumhouse released a trailer showcasing several interesting titles such as Grave Seasons and the next title from Sam Barlow, Project C. Included in the montage of games would be Blumhouse’s first official release, Fear The Spotlight.
Described as a “creepy love letter to classic 90’s teen horror stories,” Fear The Spotlight looks to take the visual aesthetic of classic PlayStation One titles such as Resident Evil and ClockTower and bring them into the modern day. Since Blumhouse first revealed developer Cozy Game Pals’ upcoming game, it’s been at the top of my list. The only thing left is to find out if this game is worth a day-one purchase.
Review Round-Up:
One of the standout features of Fear the Spotlight is its atmospheric design. Set in a school during a horrific fire, the environment plays a significant role in creating a sense of unease. As I navigated through dimly lit hallways, shadowy corners, and abandoned classrooms, I was never quite sure what lurked just out of sight. – Justin Wood, CGM
Blumhouse’s horror chops shine in this old-school survival game, yet it still feels completely accessible to newcomers. It’s a fine line because horror in any medium can be pretty divisive. But Fear the Spotlight manages to remind us horror fans of everything we fell in love with when we played the OGs, while it holds the hands of newbies who are just dipping their toes. – Verna Colosi, Pocket Tactics
