10 years ago the video game world was in a duel to the death. Game of The Year: Dragon Age Inquisition or Shadow of Mordor? Pick a side and make your claim! Naturally, Dragon Age was the rightful choice. After all, in the scientific formula of “Horse or Fishing” that helps determine Game of The Year, Inquisition has “horse.”
10 years later, though, surely these two storied franchises have continued on, broadening our ideas of what great gaming could be… well, as it turns out, Shadow of Mordor’s incredible Nemesis System that helped make the game great was patented. After a good but not great sequel, the series and its brilliant gaming mechanic were never seen again. As for Dragon Age, it’s been MIA for the last 10 years. Turns out EA and Bioware decided the best thing to do after making the game of the year was to stop doing that. After Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, Bioware finds themselves in a desperate position. Return to glory days or else.
I guess there’s really only one question left to ask. Did they do it? Is Bioware “back?” Is Dragon Age: The Veilguard worth buying on day one?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is exactly what we needed after Inquisition. From the moment I stepped onto Minrathous’ streets, it felt like coming home. After such an agonising wait, the franchise I adore is back as strong as ever. It respects what’s gone before while also welcoming change and innovation. – Emma Flint, Gaming Bible
Dragon Age: The Veilguard fleetingly captures BioWare magic, but just as often as it does this, it also disappoints with repetitive gameplay plagued with annoyances. While BioWare nails what it does best, like the excellent cast of characters and their interpersonal relationships, from a gameplay perspective, it too often feels frustratingly stuck in the past. – Jordan Middler, VGC
