Life is Strange: Double Exposure: Review Round Up

When the original Life is Strange was released its story and characters resonated with players worldwide. For myself, it helped me move on from a great loss that I had experienced. Even to this day, Max Caulfield has remained one of my favorite fictional characters across any artform simply for how much she’s meant to me. So it’s understandable that when a sequel to the original game was announced there was a lot of trepidation amongst fans. While we were excited to see Max again, the idea of someone returning to her story and adding more could be disastrous.

Those worries seem to have subsided, at least for now. With episodes 1 & 2 being available for early buyers, reactions to Max’s next adventure were well received. This does leave a few questions, though. Can developer Deck Nine land the plane on the remaining episodes? Will they ruin a story that means so much to so many? And lastly, is this worth getting on day one?

Review Round-Up:

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure is a triumphant return for a matured Max Caulfield, a character-driven paranormal mystery that old fans and newcomers should embrace. – Chris De Hoog, CGM

…despite Double Exposure’s finer moments and startling vision to move the series forward, what’s here now doesn’t feel as assured a step as I’d have liked. While visually polished, there’s one too many narrative rough edges and not enough resolution when all is said and done. – Tom Phillips, Eurogamer

Life is Strange: Double Exposure takes a hard pivot to nowhere. It turns out the biggest plot twist was Deck Nine failing to stick the landing. I was told I’d come out of LiS: DE saying “I needed that” but I came out of it saying no one needed that. I finished the game expecting a narrative sweater, something comforting and carefully woven, and what I got was nothing but fabric scraps. – Janet Garcia, Pen To Pixels
