Predicting The 10 Biggest Movies of 2025

The box office is something that I’ve always been interested in. When does a movie succeed or fail? What makes it happen? While the pandemic made it incredibly difficult to talk about what was going on at the movie theaters, 2024 was proof that people were finally fully motivated to go back to the movies. I know, I know, Furiosa flopped which means I’m wrong and the movies are dead. Maybe next time we shouldn’t think a famously niche franchise will suddenly rake in a billion dollars.

With all that said, with superhero movies mostly taking the year off, 2024’s top 10 at the box office had a unique look. Whether it was (Domestically) Beatlejuice, Beatlejuice playing on everyone’s nostalgia, or Hollywood being forced to admit that a big musical release was, in fact, a musical that allowed Wicked to dominate, the box office was a lot of fun and stopped a lot of random weirdos complaining about superhero movies. About that though… I’ve got really bad news for everyone who hates fun. Superhero movies aren’t just back, they’re going to be inescapable this year.

Before I make a purely for-fun prediction of the top 10 movies at the 2025 box office, here is one last tip of the hat to last year’s most popular movies.

And with that, here are my predictions for the top 10 movies at the box office for 2025.

1.) Avatar: Fire and Ash

Maybe you’re new here, but Avatar makes a lot of money. As long as this comes out this year, it’s taking the top stop.

2.) Superman

I might be a bit bullish on Superman, but an entire company’s future hangs on this movie not only being successful but being a generational hit. As long as this delivers the quality I think it will, the repeat viewings from long-time fans should elevate this movie to one of the biggest of the year.

3.) The Minecraft Movie

I honestly don’t care what the internet says. This is a movie for little kids and I think a lot of little kids are going to make their parents go see this. Maybe number 3 is too high, but I would be shocked if this movie wasn’t a massive success.

4.) Fantastic Four: First Steps

Fantastic Four might be the 3rd and final movie of the year for Marvel, but it’s also the one with the most hype. No matter what Captain America or Thunderbolts does at the box office, I would be stunned if Fantastic Four doesn’t continue the trend of Marvel being successful at the box office.

5.) Lilo & Stich

The Disney live-action remakes have been hit or miss but even Mufasa did really well despite the internet telling me no one wanted to see it. I predict now that there’s going to be a group of critics in their 40s who missed Lilo & Stitch when they were younger and aren’t going to see this movie’s success coming. Lilo & Stitch is one of the last animated Disney movies that really meant a lot to me when I was younger and I’m genuinely excited for this and that’s something I haven’t said about one of these Disney remakes in a long time.

6.) Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning

It’s the final ride in the storied history of the Mission Impossible franchise. What will Tom jump off of in this one? I have a feeling a lot of people are going to go to the theaters to find out.

7.) Elio

Elio is a little kid who wants to be abducted by aliens… and then it happens. The teaser trailer for this looks like a lot of fun and now that Disney/Pixar is finally back to putting their animated movies in the theater, these movies are finally back to making money. With Elio, I see no reason for that trend to stop.

8.) Wicked: For Good

From my understanding, all the good songs are in the first Wicked movie. So Wicked: For Good might not make the money the first one did, but theater kids are gonna theater.

9.) Thunderbolts

I feel confident in putting two of the three Marvel movies in the top 10, but I’ve gone back and forth on which one I think will make it. While I’m excited for Captain America, it’s hard to tell just how many of us are out there. While its February release date is closing in, I’m starting to see a groundswell of buzz, I’m still nervous that for reasons outside of the movie’s control, it might not be the big hit that it should be. That said, I’ve loved everything they’ve shown off with Thunderbolts and I think this movie will be a lot of fun. With a great cast and an interesting premise, I think people will be excited to to have a movie they can watch that hopefully promises a good time.

10.) Jurassic World Rebirth

Everyone says these movies are bad. Seriously, go anywhere in the world and you will hear people claim that all of these Jurassic World movies are bad. Well, guess what? The last one made a billion dollars! Is this the one that breaks the franchise? Maybe. But we can’t forget the most important thing that this franchise brings to the table: Dinosaurs. And no matter what we think of these movies, Dinosaurs are cool.
