I’m gonna be honest, I’ve avoided most information that’s out there for The First Berserker: Khazan. Based on a video I watched at least a year ago, my quick description is that The First Berserker is a Souls-like game with an anime art style… that’s it. That’s all I know. So if you don’t mind, why not join me in finding out if this game is worth our money at release by checking out some reviews from the most talented people in the industry… that said, I haven’t chosen the reviews yet so hopefully the people I choose are, in fact, the most talented people in the industry. Don’t let me down!
Review Round-Up:
What was once a peak point of frustration has become my favorite part of The First Berserker; the bosses are ultimately what make it worth playing. While they are incredibly hard to take down, every one can eventually be read like a book, telegraphing the moves they’re about to make and predictable strategies they’ll use throughout the fight. Every death that was once met with confusion and irritation has become a learning experience I look forward to absorbing. Every restart is a renewed chance to land my attacks and survive with newfound knowledge. Yes, there are plenty of cheap attacks, one-hit kills, and groan-inducing mistakes, but I’ve been enjoying studying each big boss I come across as much as the catharsis of finally taking them down. – John Carson, IGN
The First Berserker: Khazan is a typical Soulslike-inspired action RPG that takes a lot of inspiration from Nioh, and offers nothing new that separates itself from the dozens of others out there. Even in the many aspects it takes from Nioh, it often does them worse. Its beautiful art direction is largely held back by a deliberately dull color palette. Additionally, its combat has some great animations, yet overall feels sluggish because of how restrictive its stamina system is. I was prepared to have a great time with The First Berserker: Khazan, but there’s so little that I enjoyed because it always took two steps back in every step it took forward. – Josh Torres, RGP Site
