I love indie games. Whether it’s a smaller $5 title like Minami Lane that brings you hours of joy or something like Stardew Valley that you and your friends have played for years and years, the indie gaming space is a wonderful place to explore and look for newly released games. I think my favorite part of the indie game scene is the freedom developers have to make whatever they want. “What if we made Mario Maker but instead of Mario, it was Zelda?” “What if it was Stardew Valley mixed with the love of 90’s anime Sailor Moon?” “What if it was Pokemon but fun?”
And it’s these types of combinations that bring us to today’s game, Mirthwood. Mirthwood is a mix of, yes, Stardew Valley and… Fable? Well, it sounds like the fine folks at Bad Ridge Games are combining two of my favorite games into one. Usually, I’m skeptical of games like this but the trailer looks amazing. The question still needs to be asked though. Mirthwood, is it worth a day-one purchase?
Review Round-Up:
Mirthwood is an open-world farming sim that sees you escaping feudalism into a land of true freedom, where only your ability to farm, fight, and trade determines your survival. Hardly my first farming game, I was intrigued to find a title in the genre with a dark fantasy setting—one I’ve yet to see a farming sim pull off. Though it took a while, I found myself immersed in Mirthwood and can honestly say it’s one of my new favorite farming sims. – Erik Hodges, Try Hard Guides
As much fun as I am having in the game, there is a, perhaps understandable, snag to this hugely ambitious indie project: Jank. Most things I run into are strange but ultimately harmless. Like on occasion the world will just pause for a second and then continue on as normal. Or sometimes, if I scroll over too far in the workbench menu, recipes that shouldn’t be associated with it pop up. Maneuvering through combat and the menus can also feel pretty clunky. – Jill Grodt, The Indie Informer
