PlayStation’s June 2026 State of Play

This is it! The big one! For crying out loud, you can watch this thing in movie theaters all around the United States. And after a two-week hype cycle, it feels like excitement couldn’t be any higher for PlayStation’s State of Play. The question is, though, will it live up to the hype? Did they oversell? Is Cloud in GTA 6? The people demand answers!

The Good

Where do we even begin? I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. This event was fantastic. Usually, even the best of these events have a moment of lull, leaving you wondering how a certain game made it into the event, but at least for me, this event was all gas, no brakes. Everything I wanted to see, I saw, and if it was a game coming out this year, its trailer ended with a release date. Finally, no more wondering when I’ll be able to visit the dunes of Aracas. Finally, no more wondering why the wicked can’t rest. FINALLY, I no longer have to wonder who Dr. Doom calls his boys. From Wolverine to God of War, this event had everything. You know what? Screw it! Surprise top 5, right now! And if you want to know why it’s ranked where it is, just click the picture to see the trailer. Once your eyes have uncovered the truth, you’ll understand ALL.

5.) Bancho The Chef
4.) No Rest for the Wicked
3.) God of War: Laufey
2.) Wolverine
1.) Tokon: Fighting Souls

The Bad

For me, when I think back to this event and think about the “bad,” I’ll be left with just one word: September. If you weren’t convinced that GTA was coming out this year, then the onslaught of games that were announced for September should have done it. Here are the heavy hitters that we currently know about for September.

Blood of The Dawnwalker, September 3
Wolverine, September 15
Dune: Awakening, September 22
Silent Hill: Townfall, September 24
Control Resonant, September 24
Onimusha: Way of the Sword, September 25

And this doesn’t include what we might see later in the week. Who knows how many games thought they would be the only ones to claim September as the perfect time to release before GTA takes over the whole world? With every single one of these looking like they’re worthy of a day one purchase, I’m just not sure how anyone could have the time or, more importantly, money to play everything.

The Ugly

While I said that the overwhelming number of release dates for September was “the bad,” maybe the whole point of the State of Play was actually about the release dates we didn’t get along the way. Trust me, I’m grasping at straws here. There really isn’t much to be disappointed about, but PlayStation does find itself in a weird spot where it’s announced several big first-party titles, yet none of them have release dates. What gives? Originally, when God of War: Laufey was first shown, I was convinced that the trailer would end with a release year, but as the trailer went longer and longer, I started to think that with such an impressive and polished showing, we weren’t only going to get a release year but a release month. My expectations, unfortunately, made the ending of the trailer even more disappointing when it turned out that neither would be revealed. With the God of War Remake, Intergalactic, and now, God of War: Laufey all having been announced with no release dates, Sony’s first-party lineup, while exciting, still leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall, this was a fantastic event that only keeps the momentum of Summer Game Fest going. The week has already been great, showing off both big and small games, and this is only the beginning. Later this week, we’ve got Geoff Keighley’s 2-hour-long Summer Game Fest event plus a lot more streams from other creators covering even more games. I can’t wait to watch and report back on the best games that everyone needs to know about.
